Maternal Attitude to the Newborn Infant and Perception of the Mother¢¥s Role during the Early Puerperium


Abstract
For the purpose of evaluating the maternal attitude to the newborn infant and perception of the mother¢¥s role during the early puerperium, 253 puerpera who delivered at the St. Mary¢¥s, Kang Nam St. Mary¢¥s and St. Paul¢¥s Hospitals in Seoul from November to December, 1980 were randomly selected.
Questionnaires containing 50 items of questions developed by author were for collection of essential data.
The results were as follws;
1) On the whole, the attitude for mother-child relationship and mother¢¥s role(Mean Attitude Score, MAS : 3.75) revealed moderately positive response, and that for the nurturing (4.58) revealed highly positive response.
And as the view point of individual items, the perception of mother¢¥s role (4.28), maternal emotional status (3.73) revealed highly and moderately positive responses respectively, while both the attitude- to the newborn infants (3.30) and establishment of mother-child affection (3.73) revealed merely usual response.
2) As for the factor of maternal age both physical and emotional factors of nurturng in the group of 20s (4.70 and 4.55) revealed significant difference (P<.02 and P<.01) from those in the group of 30s (4.49 and 4.30), but no significant difference was noted between 2 groups in mother-child relationship and perception of mother¢¥s role.
3) As for the factor of parity, the perception of mother¢¥s role and emotional factors of nurturing in multipara (4.5 and 4.49) revealed more positive response (P<.01 and P<.01) than those in primpara (4.12 and 3.62), but no significant difference was noted in both eatablishment of mother-child relationship and physical factors of nurturing.
4) As for the factors of presence or absence of antepartum care and education all above items revealed no significant difference.
5) As for the factor of the family systems the establishment of mother-child relationship in the group of nuclear family (4.48) more positive response than that in the
group of the large family (3.71), but no significance was noted all the other items,
6) As for the factor of newborn infant¢¥s sex, male or female, and the factor of presence or absence of family planning all the items revealed no significant differences.
7) As for the factor of educational level the attitude for nurturing in the group above college (4.41 and 4.31) revealed more positive response (P<.01) than in the group below high school (4.68 and 4.54.)
